The word scapular derives from the latin "scapulae" which means "shoulders". Its origins are traced back to the Middle Ages when monks used to wear two large pieces of cloth suspended, both front and back, from the shoulders. Initially adopted as an apron or working clothing it later became an official habit for members of monastic orders. 

Nowadays the typical scapular is a sacramental made of two square pieces of wool cloth worn over the shoulders, so that one part hangs over the chest while the other hangs over the back. It is a visible sign of consecration and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary who promised to grant special aid, especially at the hour of death, to all those who wore the scapular with fidelity and honor throughout life.

Please note: 

- All first scapulars must be blessed and imposed by a priest 
- The scapular should be worn constantly 
- It must be square and made of wool cloth 
- Alternatively to the wool scapular it's also acceptable to wear a scapular medal portraying the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on one side and Our Lady of Mount Carmel on its reverse side, after having them both blessed.  

This beautiful scapular is manufactured in Brazil and it is entirely made of 14K gold plated.

It features two square medals representing the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on its front side and the Sacred Heart of Jesus on its reverse.
